Abergele Community Transforms Library Forecourt Through Welsh Government–Funded “Town Boost” Project

The Abergele community came together in teamwork, creativity, and civic pride during the Town Boost project, delivered in the week commencing 24 March.

The initiative, funded by Welsh Government, and led by Creative Communities International, brought residents, businesses, and councils together to reimagine and enhance the public space outside Abergele Library. The week-long programme included a Community Information Night, an intensive Planning Day, and a series of Business Workshops, all designed to gather ideas for how to create positive change in the town centre.

The project culminated in a hands-on community makeover day, where volunteers from across the town rolled up their sleeves to bring the shared vision to life. Participants included residents of all ages, alongside businesses, town councillors, and representatives from the county council. The day was led by David and Jodi of Creative Communities International, whose energy and expertise encouraged participants to make bold, playful changes to the space. Although the weather largely held, barring a brief, dramatic burst of hailstones, spirits remained high.

Volunteers spent the day painting, cleaning, weeding, and revitalising the area, successfully transforming it into a more eye catching and playful space for residents and visitors alike. A memorable highlight of the makeover was the installation of giant wooden “books,” created in line with Creative Communities International’s “show, don’t tell” philosophy. These sculptural books serve as a visual cue that this is the home of Abergele’s library, adding both charm and function to the space. The Town Boost project showcased the power of collaboration and the value of creative approaches to placemaking. The transformation demonstrates what can be achieved in a short space of time, when communities are given the tools and confidence to shape their own public spaces, and stands as a vibrant new landmark in the heart of Abergele.
